Hikes

"To stay on course we must first keep our eyes further ahead"

In the vicinity there are several walking trails — a number of shorter ones that are walked in an hour — but also longer trails appropriate for day-hikes or several days of hiking.

The landscape to the south is hilly, rolling, with vineyards and fruit orchards scattered over endless terracing that has been developed over the centuries. The area is included in UNESCO's list of world heritage sites because of these terracings for viticulture. There are several lovely peaks that can be reached in an hour's hiking or so.

The charming artist-village Collioure is reachable by hike in 2-3 hours. The neighboring village Banyuls sur Mer is a center for hiking in the Pyrenees. Grand Route 10 (GR10) begins here, which goes from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, across the Pyrenees, and within a while connects to the famous pilgrimage way El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, also known as The Way of Saint James. Banyuls sur Mer is about 3-4 hours hike from L'abri la Vall. See the map for more info on this and GR10 here.
